Mental Health in Schools Team (MHST)

Somerset has been nominated to become a ‘trailblazer’ site to implement the proposals set out in the Government Green Paper ‘Transforming children and young people’s mental health provision’ to increase support for CYP with mild to moderate mental health issues and linking them to specialist NHS services when needed.

The MHST project is being led by Somerset Clinical Commissioning Group with support from Somerset NHS Foundation Trust, Young Somerset, the Local Authority and Public Health. For full briefing go to: Improvements to CYP Mental Health Services in Somerset – Schools .docx

The MHST are working with a selection of Secondary, Middle and Primary schools across the County with support through the Pupil Referral Unit’s (PRU’s) with a team of practitioners in each area (Taunton, Sedgemoor, South Somerset and Mendip.)

Each team are responsible for:

  • Delivering evidence-based Low Intensity CBT interventions for children, young people with mild to moderate mental health issues. We also provide Parent led LICBT and Parenting groups.
  • supporting the mental health lead in each education setting to introduce or further develop their whole school approach to wellbeing
  • providing timely advice to school staff, and liaising with external specialist services to help children and young people to get the right support and stay in education

Requests for help can only come into the service via the Mental Health Lead within any MHST assigned school.  The request form can be found here.
