My Birth Place Choices

My birth place choices

If you live in Somerset and are receiving care from our midwives based at Musgrove Park Hospital, Yeovil District Hospital or Bridgwater Community Hospital, you have a choice of where to birth your baby. Your choice may depend on your needs and risks during pregnancy which will be discussed with you.

The postnatal period is the time after your baby has been born. If you deliver at Musgrove you will receive postnatal care on either Fern or Bracken ward. If you deliver at Yeovil you will receive post-natal care on Freya Ward.

Our midwives and maternity support workers are experienced in the support of birthing people and their babies, not only after normal birth but also after instrumental or caesarean section births.

Please watch the video about going home from hospital and your postnatal care.

Infant feeding

Our staff can help you, however you wish to feed your baby but we have a special focus on breastfeeding, because we think this will give your baby the best start in life. There may be circumstances where your baby may not be with you on the ward as they are being cared for within our special care baby unit. We will encourage and help you to express milk for you to feed your baby.
