Childhood difficulties

Experiencing difficulties in childhood can have a severe and long-lasting effect. Children may then grow up and see the world as a frightening and dangerous place. When this is not resolved, a sense of fear and helplessness can carry over into adulthood, setting the stage for further problems.  Experiences could include:

  • An unstable or unsafe environment
  • Separation from a parent
  • Serious illness
  • Intrusive medical procedures
  • Sexual, physical or verbal abuse
  • Domestic Violence
  • Neglect
  • Bullying
