Our Green Plan 2025 to 2028: Building a Sustainable Future for Somerset

Somerset NHS Foundation Trust is committed to delivering outstanding healthcare while protecting the environment for future generations. Our Green Plan 2025 to 2028 sets out how we will achieve this by embedding sustainability into everything we do, from reducing carbon emissions and improving biodiversity on our sites, to promoting healthier lifestyles and resilient services.

Climate change is not just an environmental challenge, it’s a health challenge. Rising temperatures, poor air quality, and extreme weather events all impact the wellbeing of our communities. That’s why our Green Plan focuses on actions that benefit both people and the planet such as creating greener spaces, encouraging active travel, and reducing reliance on single-use plastics.

This plan outlines six key areas of action:

  • workforce and leadership – empowering colleagues to lead sustainable change
  • estates and facilities – decarbonising our buildings and improving energy efficiency
  • travel and transport – transitioning to zero-emission vehicles and promoting active travel
  • supply chain and procurement – working with suppliers to reduce environmental impact
  • digital transformation – leveraging technology to deliver care more sustainably
  • climate change adaptation – ensuring our sites and services are resilient to future climate risks.

Our vision is simple: to help the people of Somerset live well for longer by minimising our environmental impact and creating a healthier, more sustainable future.
