Capsule test

The capsule sponge is a quick, simple and safe way to collect cells from your oesophagus (food pipe). It helps doctors detect conditions such as Barretts oesophagus, which can increase the risk of cancer if not monitored. The test takes around 10 minutes and is carried out by a trained nurse.

Your doctor or nurse may recommend the capsule sponge test if you:

• have long-term heartburn, reflux or indigestion
• need a check for Barretts oesophagus
• want to avoid a more invasive procedure like an endoscopy and are at risk of oesophageal cancer, taking part may reduce the risk.

1. You will swallow a small capsule attached to a thin string.
2. After 5 to 7 minutes, the capsule dissolves and releases a soft sponge.
3. The nurse gently pulls the string back up – it collect a sample of cells.
4. The sample is sent to the lab for testing.
5. Most people describe it as slightly uncomfortable but not painful.

• Do not eat or drink for at least 4 hours beforehand.
• Tell your nurse if you:
  • have trouble swallowing
  • take blood-thinning medication
  • have any allergies or bleeding disorders.

• You can eat and drink like you normally do.
• You might feel a mild sore throat for a few hours.
• Results are usually available within a few weeks.

• Mild throat discomfort.
• Small chance of minor bleeding or gagging.
• Serious complications are very rare.
