Audio Stop Smoking System

The Audio Stop Smoking System was developed by Somerset NHS Foundation Trust to help keep areas smoke free. It works by playing short, recorded messages that remind people that they are in a smoke free area. These messages start when a patient, colleague or visitor presses a button in shared spaces.

Beacon Buddy

Beacon Buddy is a free app designed to support patients receiving radiotherapy at the Beacon Centre, Musgrove Park Hospital.

Created by our Therapy Radiographers, and shaped with input from patients, the app guides you through every stage of your radiotherapy journey, helping you feel informed, prepared and supported.

You can download the app for Android or iPhone.

Emergency Role Allocation Systems (ERA Systems)

ERA Systems was created by Somerset NHS Foundation Trust and digital partner Blüm Health. It aims to make emergency care and patient support better by using easy‑to‑use touch screen communication tools.

ERA Emergency is a call bell system that helps clinical staff work together quickly and safely during emergencies.

ERA Care is a tool that helps new parents check their health after giving birth. It can spot early signs of pelvic health problems, birth trauma or mental health concerns, and lets people refer themselves for support.

ERA Waiting is a system for patients in high‑risk waiting areas. It lets them communicate directly with triage nurses for medical help or support with moving around.

EXTOD Education (Exercise for Type 1 Diabetes)

EXTOD, which stands for Exercise for Type One Diabetes, is a group made up of healthcare colleagues, researchers, and people who live with Type 1 Diabetes. Its aim is simple, no one with Type 1 Diabetes should miss out on sport, exercise or being active.

EXTOD Education is run by Somerset NHS Foundation Trust, the University of Birmingham and the University of Exeter. It gives special training to healthcare professionals so they can give safe, accurate advice to people with Type 1 Diabetes about being active.

 

HANDi Paediatrics

The Patient Entrepreneur Programme is an external programme for patients and carers who are developing healthcare innovations.

Pee in Pot (PiP)

In 2025, Somerset NHS Foundation Trust and Polyco Healthline Limited made a new product called Pee in Pot (PiP). It helps people give a urine sample more easily and without making a mess. PiP is disposable, biodegradable, and fits on top of normal specimen pots. It helps people collect their sample without spills. By making the process cleaner and more comfortable, PiP makes testing easier for patients and healthcare colleagues. For more information, visit the Pee in Pot website.

A simple question, “Show me your meds, please”, has been shown to help cut down on medicine waste. This saves money, helps the environment, and supports better, more personalised care for each patient.
