A smokefree environment
As health care providers we are committed to improving the health and wellbeing of patients, carers, staff and anyone else visiting our sites. Smoking and breathing other people’s smoke is both a public health and workplace hazard.
Across all of our sites and services in Somerset, we are smoke free.
Vaping and e-cigarettes
We support the use of vaping and e-cigarettes as a way to quit smoking.
We allow e-cigarettes on trust grounds. If you are vaping or using e-cigarettes we ask you to be considerate to those around you, keeping a reasonable distance from windows, doors and pathways.
Care in a hospital or ward
Coming into hospital presents many people with an opportunity to stop smoking. We are committed to providing practical help, support and advice if you want to take advantage of this opportunity.
If you are a smoker who is unable to leave your ward or the grounds of the hospital, nicotine replacement therapy should be offered when you are admitted and throughout your stay to help minimise withdrawal symptoms before they occur.
If you are not offered this support please ask any member of the ward team.
If you don’t want to quit smoking, you will be provided with guidance and support during your temporary abstinence.
People receiving care at home and in the community
When staff are visiting you in your own home, please refrain from smoking for the duration of the visit.
Anyone, including patients, their carers or relatives, who wants to quit smoking can seek support from:

Care in our mental health wards
We are committed to providing practical help, support and advice if you want to stop smoking while you are on one of our mental health wards. If you don’t want to quit smoking, you are currently allowed to smoke in designated outdoor spaces but are working to make these areas smokefree too.
