Advice during the red heat health alert

With temperatures expected to rise over the next few days across Somerset, please take precautions to keep you and your families safe.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued a red heat health alert. A red alert indicates significant risk to life for even the healthy population.

To stay safe during this period of hot weather please:

  • Avoid going out during the hottest part of the day (11am–3pm)
  • Plan physical activities such as exercise or dog walking for the cooler hours of the morning or evening
  • Keep indoor spaces cool by closing curtains or blinds on sun-facing windows
  • Wear light, loose-fitting clothing, sunglasses, and a wide-brimmed hat if you go outside
  • Stay in the shade and use sunscreen regularly
  • Drink plenty of fluids and avoid excess alcohol
  • Check in on elderly relatives, neighbours, and anyone who may be more vulnerable
  • Be aware of the signs of heat exhaustion and heatstroke and know when to seek help.

To support the demand on our services we are asking people to please use NHS services wisely and help keep our emergency departments free to treat people with life threatening illnesses.

If you are unwell and unsure where to go visit 111.nhs.uk or call 111 – this service will provide advice and direct you to the best place for the care you need. We’d also suggest treating minor conditions at home – your local pharmacist can offer advice.

Further information on staying safe in hot weather or information for your area can be found on the NHS website and Somerset Council.

What we are doing to prepare

In response to the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) red heat health alert, we are preparing for challenging working conditions and an increased demand for our services.

Colleagues and teams across the trust are working hard to prepare as much as we can for an increase in patients needing to access our services, as well as ensuring the environments for patients and our colleagues are as comfortable as possible.

Important information about appointments this week

Currently there are no changes to appointments however, our outpatients teams are contacting patients due to attend appointments over the next few days to discuss whether they would prefer to postpone until after the current hot temperatures.

If you are concerned about attending your appointment, please contact the team this was booked through to discuss your options.

Otherwise please attend your appointments as normal.
