We provide a comprehensive service to people with all types of endocrine (hormonal) conditions. We care for patients with pituitary, thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal and other less common conditions leading to hormonal imbalance.
We hold general endocrine clinics at Musgrove Park Hospital, and Chard, Bridgwater and Minehead community hospitals. Specialised clinics are generally held at Musgrove Park Hospital.
At Musgrove, we perform complex endocrine investigations and have close links with our local endocrine surgeon. We also have close links with very specialised endocrine surgeons in London, Bristol and Birmingham. We follow recommendations of the Society of Endocrinology, the American Endocrine Society and European Endocrinology consensus guidelines for the management of endocrine conditions. We also adhere to guidance from the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) for the use of recombinant human growth hormone in adults.
We offer a complete service to people with all types of diabetes and problems linked to the illness. We care for patients with type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes with specific issues (for example, assessment for insulin, weight problems, and kidney or foot problems) and other types of diabetes (for example, due to pancreatitis, genetic causes and cystic fibrosis).
We provide joint specialist clinics for patients with diabetes and retinopathy, diabetes and foot problems, diabetes in pregnancy and pregnancy planning in diabetes. In addition, we have a specialised service for people with diabetes picked up in childhood who transfer to an adult clinic, those on insulin pumps, and those with diabetic nephropathy. We can help educate people with type 1 diabetes by providing information such as dose adjustment for normal eating (DAFNE).
We hold clinics at Musgrove Park Hospital, and Chard, Bridgwater and Minehead community hospitals.
We carry out detailed assessments to look for any hormonal problems and other conditions and factors linked to obesity. We tailor treatment plans to improve health by working at changes in lifestyle and making sure any other problems are treated as effectively as possible.
We’re the busiest weight management clinic in the South West, seeing 40-50 people a month. We offer a number of programmes focusing on lifestyle and dietary changes, medication, psychological support and, if appropriate, preparation for weight loss surgery in the safest possible environment.
We also see an increasing number of people with rarer conditions linked to obesity such as those with genetic causes, craniopharyngiomas and prader-willi syndrome.
