brain fog

Brain fog

Many people with post-COVID-19 syndrome say that they feel not quite with it; they often forget things and find it difficult to concentrate. You may also struggle to say the word you want to. This is often called brain fog.

You may be worried that it is the start of long term memory problems: we are not seeing any big link. You probably find it worse after physical, brain or emotional activity. To help our brain fog recover we need to look after our physical, emotional and mental energy levels. Check out our fatigue page to help with this.

Helping brain fog

The problem is nearly always linked to brain fatigue so we need to give our brain the opportunity to recharge its energy. This doesn’t usually just happen, but needs you to help it. Here is a list of ways to help:

  • Regular healthy meals – more processed foods give you energy boosts quickly which then disappears as quickly as it came, worsening brain fog (and fatigue in general)
  • Get outdoors regularly through the day – and, if you are able to exercise, do it outside
  • Regular rest times planned into your day
  • Aim to improve your night sleep (see our sleep page)
  • Reduce (or ideally stop) any substance which affects your brain, including alcohol, caffeine and nicotine
  • Relaxation for the mind – check out Smiling Minds or Every Mind Matters
