Perineal massage

Starting at 35 weeks, you can try perineal massage every day until your baby comes. This might help prevent tearing when you give birth, especially if you are having your first baby. You can do this massage yourself, or your partner can help. Do it every day or every other day for 5 minutes.

Here’s how:
  • Clean your hands.
  • Sit down and bend your legs. Use a mirror if you want.
  • Put some vegetable oil on your fingers.
  • Gently push your fingers into your vagina and massage the lower part in a U-shaped movement

It might feel like a stretch, but it shouldn’t hurt. If it does, stop right away.
