Understanding eating disorders

Eating disorders are serious mental health conditions that can affect a young person’s emotional wellbeing, physical health, relationships, education and daily life. They can have a significant impact on both the young person and their family, but with the right support, recovery is possible.

Who can be affected

Eating disorders can affect anyone, regardless of their age, gender, background or circumstances. They are complex conditions that are not a choice and are not caused by families. Common eating disorders include anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and other eating disorders that may not fit a specific diagnosis but still have a significant impact on a young person’s health and wellbeing.

Eating disorders can affect mood, confidence, concentration, relationships and physical health. Early assessment and intervention can help prevent difficulties from becoming more severe and support young people towards recovery.

Treatment journey

Our service aims to provide compassionate, evidence-based care that supports both the young person and their family throughout their treatment journey.

During a patient’s treatment journey, they may have contact with one or more clinicians, depending on their individual needs.

Accessing the service

If you are concerned about a young person, please go to your local GP. If appropriate, a referral will can be made.
