Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) Group

Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) is an 8-week group course that blends the principles of mindfulness practices and cognitive behavioural therapy. It was developed to help people who experience repeated bouts of depression and can be helpful for other difficulties.

Within the course you will work with a small group of people and two therapists. You will begin by building your "attention muscle" through purposefully paying attention to the present moment with a non-judgmental attitude. These practices are sometimes called meditation practices.
The course aims to help you to become aware of the signs within your body, mind and feelings that tell you to take action to look after yourself. You may choose to accept things the way they are and move on with a renewed sense of wellbeing. Or take some wise skilful action using any new insights you may have gained from the course and practices.
By the end of the course, you will have worked on stepping back from the automatic reactions you have to situations that make you feel worse. You will also build your skills to detach yourself from your thoughts and see them for what they are, just thoughts.
MBCT is most effective if you are currently well but can be helpful after a period of therapy too. Each session will last between 2 and 2.5 hours with exercise to be completed throughout the week. Please discuss this with your therapist if you are unsure.
